July 1st Sunrise Ceremony

On Saturday, July 1st from 5:15-6:00 AM, join the Hon. Carolyn Bennett for a Sunrise Ceremony to start Canada Day by honouring the First Peoples who have lived on this land for millennia.

Led by Steve Teekens, Anishnabee traditional teacher, the sunrise ceremony is a time to reflect on our lives and to offer thanks for all of creation and Mino Baamodziwin (the good life) while Mishoomis Giizis (Grandfather Sun) starts to look over us and provide us with light and warmth for the daytime. All are welcome to participate!

Where:
Wells Hill Park
470 St. Clair Ave W

When:
Saturday, July 1st, 2017
5:15 AM – 6:00 AM

“We have 150 years behind us that we need to learn from and we’ve got 150 years ahead, and we’d better just get to work.”  —  Gord Downie

For 20 years, the St. Paul’s annual Canada Day barbecue has respectfully begun with a land acknowledgment and ‎Indigenous ceremony – this year we will do the same, but something is different.

This is an especially difficult Canada Day for a great many Indigenous people. While many Canadians will be celebrating on Canada Day, for far too many it is a reminder of our colonialist, racist past. I appreciate that so many of you have indicated you want to come out and have your voices heard. I hope you will all join us on July 1st as we gather on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, the ancestral home of the Huron-Wendat – the Haudenosaunee and all Indigenous peoples whose moccasins have walked this land.

‎To tell your truths and share your stories.

As we mark 150 years since Confederation, it’s important for us to remember and reflect all aspects of our collective history. We need to remember that we are all #treatypeople and that Reconciliation isn’t an Indigenous issue – it is a Canadian imperative.

So please do come and help us start the day with a Sunrise Ceremony which will be led by Anishnabee Traditional Teacher Steve Teekens, and then join the afternoon barbeque ‎where Elder Frances Sanderson will lead an opening prayer and welcome to start our gathering in a good way.

It’s up to all of us to ensure the mistakes of the past 150 years don’t continue for the next 150 years.
